Good Ofsted for Addington Valley Academy

Message from Principal, John Reilly

We are proud to share that Ofsted have graded Addington Valley Academy Good overall and Outstanding in the area of Behaviour and Attitudes following their first inspection in January 2023.

When we opened Addington Valley Academy we set out a mission to be a flagship school for Autism, not just in Croydon but across the country. A kind, caring, school where no limits would be placed on learning and to create an environment, as the report states “where pupils can thrive”.

We have always believed that in order for the students to learn, they needed to be safe, engaged, regulated and well supported. Given the rapid growth of our school and the complexity of needs the judgement of ‘Outstanding’ for behaviour and attitudes is remarkable and what I am most proud of.

The “Good” report is a testament to effective partnerships between Croydon Local Authority, our Local Governing Body and Orchard Hill College & Academies Trust. We have worked together to set out high aspirations for our families and their children.

The report writes, “The school is a calm and orderly environment. Staff manage pupils’ behaviour exceptionally well” and “Staff are knowledgeable about how to manage pupils’ complex behavioural needs. As a result, pupils behave extremely well and learning is not disrupted.”

In summarising what it is like to attend the school, Ofsted highlighted that “Pupils are keen to get to school each day” and staff hold “high expectations” for them. “Bullying is not tolerated here, and staff are vigilant.”

I want to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to the remarkable staff at the school. They achieve amazing things each and every day with the young people in their care. Addington Valley Academy is the school it is because of them.

We have noted and will act upon the Ofsted areas for improvement. We remain relentlessly committed to providing the outstanding school you all deserve.

The progress my son has made is phenomenal, we couldn’t be happier.

We feel very lucky that he is in this school.
