Topics have been selected to be expand students’ world and give a broader curriculum while also allowing student led enquiry. Topics will be taught on a 3 yearly rotation. Students will have at least 45-minute teaching time per week.

Primary Topics Secondary Topics

Students work through ranges of enquiry in all areas of the curriculum which progress students’ subject specific skills, vocabulary and knowledge. This allows all pathways to access Topic learning.

Topic is used as a vehicle to develop students’ Learning Behaviours which is a strand of the Cognition and Learning part of the AVA Curriculum.

Summer 2 Topic

For the final half term of the year students will be working on a topic that is of interest to their class. This will involve a child led learning approach as they explore things that interest them. As a school we want to balance the need for broadening students’ understanding of the world while also allowing them to follow their interests and strengths.

Alongside our speech and language team we have worked to enhance student’s language acquisition throughout their topic learning. Students will be supported to generalise their use of the highest frequency core words while also learning subject specific vocabulary that is relevant to their class’s topic and their developmental level.
